William Samson Spurlin, Sr.

W.S. Spurlin, Sr. was a resident of Opp, Alabama, from 1900 until his death in 1961 at the age of 93 years old.  He was known to his family and friends as "Big Daddy" (years before Tennessee Williams wrote "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof").

In 1982, the Senate of Alabama adopted Resolution No. 199 to honor the "outstanding accomplishments and contributions" of W.S. Spurlin "which are a lasting integral part of the history of Opp."  The Alabama Senate described him as "truly a 'first citizen' of his beloved City of Opp."

W.S. Spurlin "helped carve his town out of the wilderness."  He built some of the town's first houses and stores with wood from his sawmill and brick that he made himself.

W.S. Spurlin was one of the first City Councilmen of Opp, under whose leadership the first municipal code was adopted.  He also served as Opps's first Postmaster.  He built Opp's first cotton gin and helped organize Opp's firs bank.  In appreciation and affection, a street in Opp was named in his honor.

The furniture in our auction is from the house at 402 East Hart Avenue, Opp, Alabama.  The house was built by W.S. Spurlin in 1933, and cared for by his daughter, Mary N. Bolan, until her death in 1999.

Items from the Spurlin Estate appeared in our February 2006 auction.
